There were some good times in that trade but the worst job I had to do
was get underneath the locos and change the traction motor brushes. To
get to them would require crawling underneath the loco (unless it was
over a pit) and then climbing up between the axles to reach the motor
covers. Then you'd have to undo the bolts which required a great deal
of force and inveriably you'd slip and whack your head on the bogie and
utter some expletives. And underneath a loco is not the cleanest of
places especially if the loco has just collected some cattle on it's
journey. That used to turn the stomach. Yep I don't miss it at all.
Still it was a stepping stone to a bigger and better career.
