Also if a driver reports a fault on say a up morning train on the East
end (like a cracked windscreen) then they might change it to run direct
so at Flinders Street it can form say a Epping train with then non
defect end leading.

East and West are also used in signal numbering (Eastbound is even,
Westbound is odd) this only for new signal numbering (like all Metrol
controlled area, but most of that has no prefix) and any other recent
re-signalling eg: Sunshine, Newport, Ringwood, Heidelberg, Upfield (but
not the auto signals with the prefix "C"), Epping, Keon Park, Lalor,
Bayswater (expect this doesn't have the prefix BAY), Mooroolbark,
Lilydale, Blackburn, Box Hill, Caulfield, and a few more.)

Sandringham is one exception it was re-numbered (so too, Brighton Beach
and Burnley) but Sandringham just got the prefix SHM9xx (where xx was
the existing number, eg 3 becomes SHM903)
