The whole length of the "Outer Circle" only existed for a relatively
short time but was hopelessly uneconomic to operate. It was closed
and reopened once during its short life.

The "circle" was certainly broken by early in the 20th Century. Some
parts of it persisted much longer, including the still extant service
to Alamein, as separate branch lines and sidings. Pretty much the
whole infrastructure "south" of Alamein was abandoned early on and
just left in place to rot for half a century, finally being scrapped
in the late 1950s.

The ARHS Vic division published a book on it, a couple of decades ago,
that has the whole sad history.
