Seriously though, if the alignment is vastly improved, thus reducing
travelling times and lowering the costs of the operator (or perhaps,
lowering the losses) this *should* be reflected in lower fares (although it
won't be). The taxi fares would make up this reduction in cost.

Although there would be a lot to be said for a shuttle bus between the
centre of town (with pickups around the place) to the out of town station.

If they could reduce the journey time by around 20 mins on SYD-MEL just by
deviating around ABX and Wodonga, it would be well worth doing. After all,
it is freight that pays its way, why should freight be disadvantaged so that
passenger trains can be more attractive?
