That depends on what you want to protect against.  Since the existing
line is so short, both the existing subs are on the same Energy
Australia main sector feed, so they can only protect against equipment
failure in the substation, which is a fairly low failure risk with
modern substation equipment.

The current drain of just one coupled set of O Class cars climbing
from water level to the top of the ridge, as they did all along the
Eastern end of the North Sydney system, would easily account for more
current than two Variotrams on the lightly graded SLR.

And much lighter gauge trolley wire than the SLR.
