80s illawarra limited stops trains

I remember when I was quite young standing on platform 6 at Sydenham in
peak hour seeing a suburban train whizz past heading south (I assume
this would have been the train to cronulla that operated first stop
penshurst), a VERY SHORT time - no more than two-three minutes later a
goose whizzed past and I remember looking down the line and seeing both
trains running parallel.

Was this some sort of special working, normal occurance (illawarra
trains switching onto the illawarra local at Sydenham) or am I just
getting too old.
