Surplus railway equipment is far too often taken to the local tip and
dumped. A lot is brand new reusable stuff. 

Unfortunately there has also been recent reports of historic railway
paper items being shredded, despite the existance of the State Records
Act 1998. [ http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/about/act.htm ]. 

Council tips have a contractor that has salvage rights to the dump, so
it may be worth approaching them to keep an eye out for any items you
are looking for.
