You answered your own question in your last paragraph. Both Hurstville
and Wollongong had "City" added to maps, timetables and signs around the
early 1990's. This also happened in Grafton, where South Grafton became
Grafton City.
This is similiar to a situation in the Hunter with Maitland, East
Maitland, High Street and Victoria Street. East Maitland and Victoria
Street are both in the suburb of East Maitland and Maitland and High
Street are both in the suburb of Maitland.
