I think it depends how far you are travelling and when.

CityRail's single fares are $2 for up to 5kms, $2.20 for 5-10, $2.60 for
10-15, $3 for 15-20, $3.20 for 20-25, $3.60 for 25-30, etc.

Sydney Buses single fares are $1.30 for 1-2 sections, $2.30 for 3-5, $2.90
for 6-9, $3.40 for 10-15 and $4 for 16+ sections.

Since a section is a bit longer than 1km, bus fares are cheaper for 1-2
sections, about the same for 3-5 sections and more expensive after that.

Both CityRail and Sydney Buses offer discounts of around 25% for regular
travellers (weeklies or travel ten), but CityRail offers 40% off for
off-peak returns, allowing them to match bus fares over short distances.
