The Tweed Heads extension from Ernest Jct was built to std gauge
proportions (well at least the tunnel was) so the idea of using the
coast line had been thought of at the time the end of it was built early
this century.

OTOH when the line was extended in 1930 odd there was no Gold Coast. I
am not sure whether Surfers Paradise was even called by that name then
(What was its old name - I can't remember?).

By the time the coast developed it was too late.
