I think Dave was talking about track and vehicle maintenance cost.
TGV/Eurostar/Thalys/ICE and Japanese Bullet trains usually not running
at night in order to carry out checking/track and vehicle maintenance
EVERYNIGHT to ensure safety and smooth running this would be a very
expensive procedure, reduce the number of trains turning around is only
a very small cost compare with track maintenance.
