i find that the best way is to switch 'group messages by thread on', view
'unread messages only'. then, i can read the messages i want, and mark the
rest as read. that way, i don't have to search through hundreds of read
messages to find any new ones. i also periodically remove the messages, but
keep the headers so these settings aren't stuffed.
