There was a case around the early ninteties where some cameraman /
reporter was just sitting around listening in on police radio when he
heard something about two blocks away. He was busy interviewing /
filming and being a general nuisance when the cops arrived. It caused a
small hubub but in the end the conclusion was that it was not illegal to
listen to the cops. After that it reverted to basically an ethical
debate, I'm not sure if it went any further.
