What's wrong with that? You purchased a SINGLE ticket. A SINGLE ticket 
allows you one un-interupted journey from point A to point B, or to 
anywhere between point A and B. Thus meaning, if you happen to exit at 
Strathfield, your one un-interupted journey is used up.

Wrong. Defeats the purpose of a SINGLE ticket.

What about extra time spent with passengers boarding and quitting trains 
halfway along their journey? What about extra wear and tear on the gates?
