The key question is what class were they?

If they were Rxxx, then IIRC NR uses Ametech transponders to keep track of
where there wagons are.  I've seen readers at Long Island Jct, Canal Jct &
just south of Wodonga (all in Victoria).  Presumably they are at other
locations too.

IASTR that NR got a stack of 2nd hand US bogies of a higher tonnage? rating
for retrofiting of existing rollingstock.
