[NSW] Exposed tram lines in Sydney

The Moore Park Super Centre (housing Harvey Norman and Dick Smith
computer stores, and various furniture and furnishing outlets) at
Kensington/Randwick is on the site of the former Dowling Street tram
depot, and is located on the corner of Southern Cross Drive (Dowling
St) and Todman Avenue.

Directly opposite is O'Dea St, where a length of single tram line has
been exposed thru excessive traffic wear on the tarred road surface.

One of my maps of Sydney trams ("Tramways of Sydney", by David R
Keenan MCIT, Transit Press Sydney 1979) shows - in 1947 - a single
line running straight ahead off Todman Ave along a tramway
reservation, through to join up with the intersections of Elizabeth
St, Bourke St and Joynton Ave Zetland.

Was this always a "road" (with vehicular access) or was it purely a
reservation for trams between Zetland and West Kensington?
