[Melb] Tram route 1 on Aust. Day

Due to the closure of Swanston Street on Australia Day route 1 trams
will be diverted via Latrobe, Spencer, Clarendon and Park streets to
South Melbourne.

My question is why can't they divert via William Street?  Or is the turning
curves at Kings Way not set up for this move?
