Mark - Take the train from Sydney to Murwillumbah (on the Qld/NSW border)  -
this is an XPT daylight service and travels thru some beautiful scenery. Stay on
the Gold Coast (Surfers Paradise) and make Brisbane a single day trip. There's
much more for you & the kids on the Gold Coast

(But I might be biased!)
