In the past I've noticed that smouldering wooden sleepers are not uncommon
on hot days. I remember watching at Richmond as a station assistant came out
with a bucket and dumped some water on the one.

I presume with most stations now unmanned, these go unnoticed. Perhaps
trains passing over them generally put them out.

Years ago when I was a kid, I was riding a Red Ratter to St Kilda. There was
a fire ahead nearby to the line... obviously not too close though, because
the train just kept on going. Thankfully not too much smoke got into the
train.
