You don't say if your train is tabled to stop at Nth Melbourne or not.
In Sydney it is common practise to stand off the Platform if
the Signal at the departure end of the Platform is at stop and you
are not tabled to stop at that station.

This is to avoid people trying to force doors open to get on or
off. I though that it is really carried over from the days of the red
rattlers as they didn't have power doors and people could get on or
off unsupervised if the train stopped on a platform where it wasn't
tabled to stop.
