All Aboard the Bondi Tram

Following is the text of another letter from the Daily Telegraph on Saturday
5/2/00:-

" Why not consider light rail - the Bondi tram - as a cheaper and more
useful option for transport in the Bondi Basin?
A light railway from Bondi Junction to the beach would cost only a fifth of
the price of the proposed heavy rail, would have stops all along the route
and would more honestly serve the community with cheap and accessible
transport.
Not only would it be more sensible to reinstate the Bondi tram; it would
also mean residents would not have to endure at least two years of heavy
truck movements through Waverley and neighbouring suburbs as rock is carted
from the tunnel excavation, and concrete brought in.
It would keep public parks for public use - there would be no station in
Bondi Park and Waverley Oval wouldn't be a construction site.
The Bondi Heavy Rail link proposal is an infrastructure solution looking for
a problem, and Transport Minister Carl Sculley is not considering the real
transport needs of Bondi's residents and visitors.
Bring back the Bondi tram and forget this impudent heavy rail plan. It can
only massacre Waverley as we know it.

Mora Main, Waverley"

Personally I do not agree with this letter at all. In my younger days when I
wanted to go to the beach from the Western Suburns we usually went to
Cronulla rather than Bondi because we could get there by one mode of
transport. A light rail from Bondi Junction to Bondi Beach is not going to
solve that. The proposal for a light rail may be good for the locals it will
not solve the overall problem for people wanting to get to Bondi Beach. The
heavy rail will solve that problem.
