Re: Conductors on buses - good idea?

Just a few further remarks:
* State Govt promised 100 conductors and said they would start in the
first 100 days in office, as you may have noticed, they haven't

* The private operators will benefit from the reduced vandalism and
fare evasion, so should be arm twisted into contributing to the cost of
these new staff

* The state opposition's transport person, Geoff Leigh, is quoted in
Metro News as wanting the taxpayer to foot the bill for the whole lot.
I never knew the opposition was so keen on spending money on public
transport, nor on being wasteful and not getting as much as possible
for the taxpayer's dollars.

* In the same article, Paul Mees is misquoted as saying that conductors
were only needed on tourist routes and areas with security problems.
What he actually said was that these were where the available 100
should be applied, but more were needed.

* National Express is quoted as basically wanting them to be nothing
more than additional taxpayer-funded ticket inspectors. they should not
be allowed to get away with this - they must be conductors and should
be called that.

* In our meetings with the tram operators we have found them rigidly
opposed to the return of conductors.
