It's the stops within the Sydney area that are the real slowdown for the
bus. A few months ago I caught a McCafferty's to Canberra on a Friday
afternoon and after stops at Parramatta and Liverpool we drove onto the
Hume Highway almost two hours later and 20 minutes late. At this point
though the bus's advantage really takes over; rail is no match for
almost 250km of continuous freeway conditions. Rail's chief advantage is
the time it can save in Sydney, but it must be backed up by strategic
realignments, extending the branch into Canberra city proper, and a
concept Countrylink's marketing department are as yet still in the
developmental stage with, promotion.
