Harris trains

I'm trying to find out what sort of combinations Harris trains were made
up of in the 70's - 80's, Every picture I have seen (not many) shows 7
car trains, yet I've seen mentioned 3 car and 4 car sets (M,T,T,M?) but
no details. Also, did these shorter sets run on the outer suburban lines
or during off-peak or both or what?
