The locos are SAR 24 class 2-8-4. They are a branch line loco with a
tractive effort of 27600lbs (don't know metric equiv). They were built
between 1939 and 1949 and were designed to operate on 45lb rail. In
normal SAR operation they were fitted with a large torpedo tender. My
understanding is that the work in NZ is a "nip and tuck" to ensure that
they fit the QR loading guage which is lot smaller than SAR.
