Re: CR/AN NSU & NT: MU

Aus loco discussion mailing list

Hello

I can't comment with any knowledge, except to say that it would be strange
to order six units that couldn't work with any other units from your fleet.
(But then, it would also appear strange to build railways in your country to
three different gauges, so strangeness alone is not going to prove anything
:-))

It also seems unusual that the units were coupled back to back. If an NJ was
sent out to take over an NT-hauled train in the event of a breakdown, it
would appear more likely for these single-cab units to be coupled elephant
style.

Likewise, if it was CR\ANR practice to haul units dead attached for loco
balancing, it does seem unusual that there aren't occasions recorded where
units are coupled elephant style rather than back to back. And why aren't
there shots of NJs coupled to NSUs ? Perhaps there are photos of these
instances, but I haven't seen them. I know from my Eyre Peninsula research
that it is perilous to make too many assumptions from photos alone . . . so,
any comments ?

It's also worth noting that in some years of research , I cannot remember
any evidence of an instance of NJs and NTs being coupled together when both
classes were operating on the Eyre Peninsula from 1984-88.

However, Railmac are apparently releasing a book on the NTs sometime next
year, so we may see the issue dealt with there.

It's worth being VERY careful with what you read, when it comes to the NTs.

Cheers

Ben
