Hello 'loco-ers,
The last 24 hours have been interesting along the Metro goods line
between Sydenham and Canterbury. The railfanning commuter has had a good
opportunity to watch some trains go by.
Monday 20/12 saw a lone 4716, running long-end leading tear past the
Cityrail service I was on between Wardell Road Junction and Hurlstone
Park station around 6 p.m.
This morning saw a pair of 81's (817?/8126) running light onto the Botany
Line through Marrickville station at around 8:20 a.m. This evening at
Wardell Road Junction/Dulwich hill station 8033/8039 came through with a
44 wagon trip train. Of interest was the lone wheat hopper marshalled
behind the locomotives. It was marked 'Port Botany-Griffith Rice Traffic
Only' (or words to that effect). The rest of the train was heavily loaded
with containers.
Another place that is good for train watching around the XPT
service centre at Sydenham. Between 7.20 and 7.30 a.m. daily, the empty
XPT set from the Up night service and the set making up the Down day
Melbourne services cross at Sydenham station, running on platforms 1+2.
Very impressive with lots of smoke too. Sydenham in the age of steam
traction does not bear thinking about.... In the evening, the XPT centre
is busy catering to the needs of arriving and departing XPT sets. It is
not uncommon to see the XPT set from the Up Grafton train and the Up
Moree/Armidale Xplorer set side-by-side in the fuelling roads around 6
p.m.
I hope this is of interest.
Scott
