We had a similar sort of MU problem at the RTM at Thirlmere a few years ago when 4102 and 4201 were the only operable diesels. AIUI 42 class can be driven from the B end but don't have train brake and all throttle notches available so couldn't be used to haul trains on the loop line. As built the 41 class could MU with another 41 class but nothing else but the MU wiring had been subsequently removed. The solution we came up with was to install another control stand in 4102 (we used a hostler control from another 42) and MU socket. 4102 could then be coupled to the back of 4201 and drive both locos, albeit with two throttles. It worked OK when tested but I don't know if it was ever used in practice hauling trains.
Regards,
Chris.
