Aus loco discussion mailing list
Just to clarify a couple of things between my post re the Df/Di/Db
(Spellchecker did a silly thing and put in Dub instead of Db), and John
Regan's message re the Df/Dj South Island combinations.
The period I referred to was around 1969 - 1975, when the original EE Df
class was still in service in the North Island. They had all been
withdrawn by 1975, and the GM Df class arrived in 1982/83. Db 1016 was,
as far as I know, only used in the North Island,as all of the Df, Di and
most of the Db's were working east of Hamilton to the Bay of Plenty
during that period.
All of the NZR EE units used engine speed control through the
electric/hydraulic governer, which gave idle+1st increase+second
increase, so several notches had same engine speed, just increased
generator loading. If I remember correctly, the Di's had a third speed
increase, but I can't find any relevant notch no's or RPM's.
Hope that clears any confusion for all of you in the Western Island of
NZ!!
Cheers
Bruce.
