RE: [Ausloco] And the 422,s.

Repairing a loco frame is just not that simple. It
depends on the nature of the fracture and the type of
material used in the frames construction. Engineers
need to be consulted to ensure that correct procedure
is followed. Quite often welding produces secondary
hardening in the weld zone meaning that in the future
the frame could fail extremely rapidly with no
warning.
With proper precautions, a sucessful repair could be
made but economic factors may be important in this
case. However if repaired the frame may still fell the
accelerated effects of fatigue causing more cracking.
An example of this is X35, rolled at Glenorchy approx
1970, repaired and in traffic until approx 1995.
Withdrawn again to due fatigue cracking of the frame.
Although ASR wouldn't expect this long in service I
hope.
