RE: [Ausloco] V/Line engines working in South Australia and rever se....
Much of the early 930 running was during my Uni days (mid 80's). I
recall seeing red 942 arriving in Spencer St in 1983 on an up Bendigo
pass (N set) - the first trial of a 930 in Victoria (I don't remember if
this was the only time a 930 ever made it so far up in the state). I
also noted a green unit (I think 947?) leading a P into Spencer St on a
Sunbury Pass (H set) in about 1986. There were certainly numerous
Geelong pass workings - sometimes final series X / single-ended 930, but
quite a few double 930 combos were used, as well as solo double enders,
including red 937 and green 938. I also saw the Mt Gambier goods
several times through Werribee with combinations of X, T, H and 930
units, also the odd C. They were certainly a welcome change, and
provided reasonable service until the heavy workload began to run them
into the ground towards the end of the 80s, with failures becoming more
common. A couple caught fire on the Western line, and I think one or
two were involved in a collision around Ararat / Dimboola area at one
point - not major, fron all accounts, but enough to provide an excuse to
withdraw them.
