Re: [Ausloco] V/Line engines working in South Australia and rever se....
Some interesting workings of 930s I can think of:
- S and a 930 working to Traralgon on a fan trip
- 937 working the Bayswater (Eastern Suburbs of Melbourne) goods train by
itself.
- I seem to recall hearing about a down Seymour grain being worked by a 930
with three other VR locos (unsure of class's), the 930 then returning to
Melbourne on an up goods.
- a 930 ran a fan tour to Colac (938?)
- A 930 (942?) ran a ballast train to Ringwood, with an X(?)
- The well known working of a 930 to Bendigo on a pass
- 930s' worked to Long Island on the steel train, there was one instance I
recall of three of them together running the up coil steel into
Melbourne, I believe they then ran the midday jet to Adelaide. I remember
another day seeing the late running up coil steel through Caulfield,
with a N class leading two 930s.
- A friend of mine photographed 939 on a Sunshine G.E.B. to Geelong grain
train.
- I remember hearing about a single ended 930 working a Sandringham ballast
train, in combination with a Y class to provide a cab for the return
trip.
- I once rode a down Bacchus Marsh pass. (the 16:20 "K" set I think?) with
an X class and 932.
- I rode several Geelong pass's with 930s, 938/967 on the 16:40, and an N
class leading 938 are two that spring to mind.
- The Mount Gambier goods was always good for 930s, usually double 930s.
They also worked throught to Melbourne, providing many interesting
combinations on the up Mt. Gambier goods. I believe they used to work
through to Melbourne if they were defective, so they could visit Dynon loco
depot for repairs, they were then returned to Geelong on either the down
goods or the pass's. Some combinations I photographed on the up and down
Geelong goods.....S-930-930, single 930, double 930, triple 930,
triple 930-T. I also made it to Geelong a couple of times to photograph the
Mt Gambier goods leaving in the evening, double 930s each time, however one
night the goods left Nth. Geelong yard with both the 930s' both A end
leading, which means they probably ran B end leading (very unusual !!!!)
when the train reversed at Maroona to go down to Portland. Another night I
was staying at Hamilton, the Mount Gambier goods rolled into town about
3:00am, I managed to get several time exposures of 930-930-T as they
shunted the yard.
The 700 class also did a few interesting workings in Victoria, although
they didn't see as much of the system as the 930s' did.
There has been a few instances of 700s' working passenger trains, I
remember riding a Saturday evening down Geelong pass with X32-701-X36. A
700 (702?) also ran a fan tour to Dennington. 700s' also worked to Long
Island on steel trains, I recall seeing the up coil steel at Nth Melbourne
one morning with X-700-700. The down slabs one afternoon had X-700. One
evening I photographed a solo 700 (706?) on a Sunshine G.E.B. to Geelong
empty grain train.
As far as I remember, the BL class pretty much stuck to the Melbourne to
Adelaide jets and superfrieghters, and the Long Island steel trains.
A few 830s made it to Melbourne, for attention on the Newport workshops
wheel lathe, but they were few and far between. To the best of my
knowledge, they arrived on the jets (superfreighters as well???) went to
the wheel lathe and returned to Dynon to be worked straight back to
Adelaide.
Back issues of Newsrail would be an excellent source for further
information.
Apologies for any errors, I have just finished nightshift, and I was a
"learner gunzel" when a lot of this was happening (late 80s') so some of my
information (and memory!) might be a little scratchy.
