[Ausloco] 5156
Sign on 0900 at Cooks River . Drive Crew car to Broadmeadow to relieve train
no. 5156. Its a nice sunny saturday morning so the drive up the Pacific
highway is quite enjoyable. While we were passing the Morriset turn off, the
phone rings,it is Mick the incoming Driver ; can you make your way to Port
Waratah to relieve us as we are going into the yard there to amalgamate with
5114 Freight Corp service as there is severe congestion through the single
line working between Awaba and Wyong and it is the only way that SYCO
(Sydney Train Control ) can get the two goods trains through the section
within an acceptable time frame.
Arriving at the "Port" we climb on a pair of green ELs with 4814 in the
shafts and thread our way through the myraid of sidings to end up on the
"Hot road " to wait further directions chased by a small group of Railfans
who must know the location of every vantage point through out the complex.
Presently Brian the Port Train Controller comes out of his office to talk to
me and my mate , Tim. He tells us that we will be thesecond train in the
consist with a Freight Corp 81 class and a thousand tons of Containers in
front. I walk over to the Freight Corp engine to discuss the working with
the Freight Corp Driver, Paul .We work out methods of contact whether it be
Radio, whistle codes or indications of the brake pipe gauge on my leading
engine.
As two container trains coupled together is out of the norm, a "Rova Mech"
telegram has to be issued. After a two hour wait and a couple of calls from
Bevan Wall who is anxiously waiting for the train at the top of Fassifern
Bank before the light goes, the telegram finally arrives. As the Freight
Corp train will be in the lead the Shunters get him to move ahead towords
Islington Jct , then we move up behind him and couple on.
After a air brake continuity test we are finally on our way at 1456 we now
have a train of 930 metres long for 2850 tonnes.
I would of liked to have shares in Kodak as there were photographers at
every vantage point recording the movement, there must of been a lot of film
exposed.
After a two and a half hour trip we arrive at Gosford where 5114 cuts off
and proceeds into the darkness to Enfield,we have to wait until the next the
next up Interurban to leave which we then follow as we make our way to ,
first Rozelle, then Cooks River and Home
And so it goes,
Milo.
