And in a similar vein, the morning combined down Albury and Tocumwal
passenger train was brought from Melbourne by the Albury loco usually an
S class but quite often an X and sometimes just a B, which was pretty
good going to lift 10-12 cars to Seymour by itself. Anyway, the Tocumwal
portion was hauled ex Seymour by a T class ex the depot. The Seymour
driver (a big wheel roster this one) always made sure that the short
nose of the T class faced down because then he would sit on the shady
side of the loco in both directions. In all my time observing this train
I never saw it go to Tocumwal (and later Cobram) with the T facing the
other way. Facing the other way when it came on at Seymour that is but
when the loco came through from Melbourne, it was a different story and
the T class could be facing either way.

This particular morning, the big wheel driver was on the platform
waiting to board the T class when it came in from Melbourne and it was
the wrong way round. Well, after much discussion, the driver managed to
convince those on the platform that morning that he was not going to
drive it the wrong way round and the signalman was duly instructed to
put the loco "over the pit" to turn. The train eventually departed about
15' late.

I am reliably informed by the same signalman that when the driver got
back to Seymour there was a posses of "top brass" waiting for him. The
upshot of it all was that they suggested to him that if he ever pulled a
stunt like that again, then don't turn up tomorrow. After that date T
classes still went to Tocumwal and Cobram short nose leading when ex the
depot at Seymour but any through loco was never turned. Observation
suggests though that Dynon may have tried to co-operate because many of
the through locos appeared to be the right way round for the Seymour
drivers.

Ah, the fun and games of the real railway.

regards

David.
