RE: Graffiti on Locomotives - Help required on removal

Aus loco discussion mailing list

On Steam Engines it works best when still fresh (easily said, that). On
Saturday November 22, 1997, 5910 was stabled at Eveleigh between workings, I
was one of the travelling fitters with the engine. A group of 3 or so
vandals (P.C. people prefer to call them "Graffiti artists") sprayed the
Driver's side of the tender and part of the rear. I won't go into the full
story, but one of them was apprehended. The upshot of this was thinners
were used to remove the graffiti, which was aided immeasurably by the fact
that the engine hadn't been washed and still had road grime on it. That
film of oil, etc prevented permanent damage.
I would suggest attacking it with a thinner compatible with the type of
paint the wagon, engine was originally painted with as soon as possible.
Our SRA colleagues in Ausloco may be able to provide a few ideas as to what
they use on carriages, buildings etc.

Evening all

Can anyone advise the best method of removing spray paint applied by taggers
(or should that be tuggers!).

Last night we suffered the second bout of graffiti at the Ferrymead Railway
here in Christchurch involving the complete painting of preserved Vulcan
railcar RM 51 from rail level to the roof on one side. Ten days ago we had
our other Vulcan RM 56, preserved electric loco EO 74, the Petrol Inspection
vehicle from Otira as well as several wagons tagged. (Of the 5 EO's there is
only EO 45 that remains without tagging, the other three were done prior to
being moved to Ferrymead.)

The Christchurch City Council Graffiti Busters spend several hours today
removing the paint with some chemical with reasonable success but it reacted
with the railcars paint and it will now require a complete paint job. We
were advised that this will be an on going problem with the taggers expected
to return in the next few days to either show of their work to their buddies
or do more.

Has any other rail preservation organisation been troubled by these pricks?
If so what measures did you take to discourage them from coming back?
What do the rail operating companies do in this area?

This is going to be an expensive and by the looks of it an ongoing problem
we would like to see stamped out.

Your thoughts on this matter would be gratefully accepted.
