Bundanoon Layout

In the mid 1980's, a group of club members decided to model a current working station in New South Wales. Armed with paper, pencils, measuring things and cameras, these enthusiasts descended upon the startled township of Bundanoon, which is between Moss Vale and Goulburn on the Sydney-Melbourne main line. Modelling real life, as most modellers know, has many pitfalls and this layout was no exception.

As soon as the trackwork was firmly fixed to the baseboard, the State Rail Authority sent their anti-modelling SWAT team to Bundanoon to remove sidings and alter pointwork. So now our layout represents the historical 'what was' instead of the present trackwork. Unfortunately, in November 1997, the main station building was burnt down by vandals, so our own rendition may be the only glimpse you will ever see of this heritage-listed building!

The layout is basically a double track loop, with the depiction of Bundanoon on one side, and on the other side is a generic type of yard that would be found in a large fictional country town. This was built for the 'push-me-pull-you' members of our club who enjoy moving rolling stock from point A to point B (or any other letter of the alphabet that wanders onto the track), without actually leaving the safety of the station area. Even thought the layout is modelled around the late 1980's period, at various times locomotives and rolling stock of many eras will be seen running (depending on the members operating); from early steam, to the diesel railcars used from the 1960's to 1980's, to both the original and last running of passenger trains like the Intercapital Daylight, to modern National Rail superfreighters.

The layout has been to most major exhibitions in Sydney and has also travelled to Taree, Newcastle, Canberra, Brisbane and Melbourne and won many awards over the years.

Bundanoon has been constructed with 10 mobile modules of mixed sizes. The finished layout size measures 7.6mts * 2.4mts (24ft * 8ft).

Here are several photographs for various scenes on the Bundanoon layout. Click on a thumbnail for a larger view.
