Quarry Trains

"Mini" Quarry Train
July 1999

The "Apex" or "Pioneer" Quarry train ,as it is now known, runs from Kilmore East to both Brooklyn and Westall on a daily basis.  A shorter version, The "mini Apex" or mini quarry train, also runs to Westall as required.

Quarry trains are infrequent visitors on the Broadmeadows Railway line.  Depending on timing and other factors, the regular daily Pioneer Quarry train may run via the Broadmeadows line to Westall from Kilmore East.  It's regular route takes it through
Broadmeadows Station, but onto the Freight route via Albion to the city, or Brooklyn.  See the map below.  The regular consist is of a G class locomotive and 21 quarry wagons.

"Mini" Quarry Train
A shorter quarry train runs to Westall "as required" and is usually haulled by an X class locomotive.  It consists of around 11-12 wagons.  Due to it's "as required" status, it is hard to predict it's times, although it often runs via the Broadmeadows line to Westall on weekends in particular.

When the Albion - Broadmeadows BG line is out of use, the Pioneer Quarry Train is diverted onto the Broadmeadows Line.  When this occurs it runs to a fairly reliable timetable.  The timetable and any known running dates are/will be available on the freight homepage.
