re Do-Do diesel locomotives in Oz

Hi all,

I think the confusion over Do-Do wheeled diesels in Australia came about when EMD built some SD-45's for somewhere in Argentina I think, in any case for narrow gauge so that existing motors could "soak up" the 3600 HP of an SD45.

There was a "review" of these engines in Railway Transportation at the time suggesting that the uploading of potential Queensland Coal traffic (remember that this was the late 60's) might justify ths development.

However as time would show, QR did it relatively slowly using building blocks of high (for the time) Horsepower locos such as the 2100's and 2350's which steadily got more powerful with traction motor technology until the exponential rise of horsepower/electrification etc

INterestingly the 2350's used EE548 traction motors which were in use by SAR 500 class diesels at the time. Given that they were a bit tight under 500 class, ( I was a locomotive electrician at the time) they must have been the stuff of pygmies under narrow gauge!

HTH
