Correct. They were the 3 position version of a Distant signal, with the arm being
the same, just working in the upper quadrant.

Your memory does serve you correct, and R&R Book number 66 (1919?) does not specify
any arm colors for any signals.

The only rule that seems to apply (although unwritten) was that the arm color was
the same as the color of the light that showed the most restrictive aspect.

ie:
2pos/ 3pos semaphore - red / green or red/yellow/green light - red arm
distant yellow/green yellow arm

this falls true for distant under home as well as the light for the distant is red,
and so is the arm.

Black chevrons were used against yellow for better visibility.
