Re: Melb 4D fails for last time

How about this for an option.

Convert the thing into two two car sets. Convert the cabs to take standard
diesel controls. Give two "A" class back to the freight mob and swop for two
"P"'s. Use the "P" to provide head end power to the set. Only mods would be
to remove the motors to reduce the weight, and a bit of rewiring to
accomodate the head end and control connections. Run them as two three or 4
cars on the Stony point according to need and availability. A better service
could be provided as the engine would not have to run around all the time
perhaps allowing one more return trip per day.
Loading guage would not be insurmoutable as they only need to be brought back
at irregular intervals and a slow trip would not be a problem if the odd
platform was a bit close or the overhead needed adjusting.
Incidently my recollection is that the 4D can be run to Newport. The overhead
mods on Foostcray platform were done for this reason. (new post and span
pulloffs immediately on the Newport end of the old signal box.)
