: Trains used to run through here, and a large electric Staff was issued as
: authority to enter the section Upfield to Sommerton. A staff instrument was
: in the Station Masters office at Upfield, another in the Ford Siding and a
: third at Sommerton Signal Box.
: I am not sure how they worked, I guess the Ford Siding, would have been an
: intermediate instrument, Another recent posting suggests Ford Siding is now
: Station Limits to Sommerton. This would explain the permanent baulk accross
: the track near Upfield Station. So the answer is that it is no longer
: allowable to run trains between Sommerton and Upfield, and vice-versa. This
: could be reversed in the future as the rail is still in place. The
: instruments, may not be, so it might be necessary, to develop an alternative
: safe-working system in order to run regular services .
: Rod ;o)

But, when trains were running between Somerton and Upfield for the closure
of the line down at Flemington Bridge they used staff and ticket (with no
tickets). The staff instrument is still inside the station office at Upfield.
The line is out of use between the baulks in Upfield yard and post 75, which
is only about 100 metres.
