Vic ALP Transport Policies

Guys,

Since it now appears the ALP may take control of Victoria, it is timely to
reflect on ALP Transport promises. The following was extracted from the Age
Newspaper online:

"ALP: The return of tram conductors and extra station attendants, as well as
extended public transport routes and improved link roads were key features
of Labor's transport policy, released on Day 17. Mr Bracks said the party
would contribute $16.5 million to private operators to restore 100 "super''
tram conductors and $14.1 million for 100 extra train station staff to
increase public transport safety and usage. He said Labor would spend $9.5
million to build a third railway track between Blackburn and Mitcham, and
$19 million to extend the East Burwood tramline to the Knox shopping centre.
Labor would provide $32.4 million over four years to extend rail lines from
Coolaroo to Craigieburn, Epping to South Morang and Cranbourne to East
Cranbourne. It would also negotiate with private operators to introduce
flier trains on the Ringwood, Dandenong and Frankston lines. Mr Bracks ruled
out introducing tolls on new road projects and indicated an underground
freeway linking the Eastern Freeway with City Link was "not a priority for
Labor''. He also promised to: commit an initial $30 million to build the
Dingley bypass between Warrigal and Springvale Roads; review the OneLink
ticketing system and ensure all ticket machines on trams sell daily tickets;
reduce the cost of the tertiary student concession card. "

I will be interesting to see how long it will take to implement some of
these initatives. I definately believe some of the rail related initatives
are well overdue. Particularily in the area of Standardisation and
Electrification extensions.

Brian
