Hi Adam,
For suburban stuff, try scanning around 413.000-417.000 - Among many
other things that occupy these frequencies (Ambulance, Telstra Trunking)
the PTC also have a trunking network. I have found that the channel with
the most activity however, is 414.875 - There are others though if you
listen around.
One of the local channels that i can think of offhand is on 469.700
