Yes, that is clear.  The reason it wasn't clear before was that all
the reports implied that the train went through the crossover
immediately beyond signal 109, which it would have done in the normal
course of events.  The collision occurred at a different place. In the
group uk.rail there seemd to be a lot of to-ing and fro-ing for a day
or two, trying to ascertain the exact track layout there.  The diagram
at http://freespace.virgin.net/g.mayo/sn109.html shows it all.
