I agree in principal, this is why rail closed down a lot of its
infrastructure as road operators picked up this shorthaul, however the bulk
of rail freight today is port to port, or inland terminal to port, in
effect running door to door, only on a larger more efficient, and cost
effective basis. Rail now has the advantage of running direct to an
unloading loading facility, a port for example with equipment to handle
large volumes of traffic, thus hastening the handling process for time
sensitive produce. This has been an excellent marketing tool for the new
rail freight operators hence the proliferation of container traffic coming
from country regions, this concept is now becoming more attractive to
customers
