This thread has given me quite some amusement!
Grades can be expressed at least 2 ways:
1. 1 in x (eg 1 in 20) where the road/rail/etc rises or falls 1 unit
in every 20 units along the ground
2. 5%, or 5/100 or 1 in 20. Same as 1.
So, no fancy software required. Express a "1 in x" type as "y/100",
and you have the percentage grade. 1 in 16 becomes 6.4/100 or 6.4%.
Practice your mental arithmetic!
