A number of stories have been floated around for years
with regards to the origins of the Ghan name, the
example you quote was one of them.

Fact is, NOBODY can say for sure, because it was an
unofficial "nick name" up until the seventies, and then
ANR began to use the name GHAN in their working time
tables, it was until then "The Fast Mixed".
