The D was not the same. The DD became the D1, and DDE became the D4. D2
and D3 were modifications of the DD/D1.

Following the traditional VR pattern, R700, 704, 707, 753, 761 and 766
would have to be reclassed R1 and R711 could then become R2. But then R766
is almost an R2 with all its modifications, so maybe 711 should be an R3!

R711 could also be called RR711. Back in the late 1940s, VR was going to
order 15 more X class steam locos, with roller bearing motion gear and a
dome similar to the R. These were to be built by Clyde and called the XX
class. In the end, the order was cancelled and the money saved bought 9
more Bs. 9 locos for the price of 15, sounds like a government to me.

It's not beyond logic to give R711 a new class. This was done to both
South African locos receiving similar treatment.

Back to the original posting, doing such modifications to 3801 would make
it 38101. :)
