Tenders for the construction of the Alice Springs - Darwin railway close
today. Three consortia have made tenders. The frontrunner appears to be
Northlink, a consotrium of Theiss and the Commonwealth Bank.
The winning big is expected to be announced mid year, with construction to
start at the end of the year. The first train to Darwin should be in 2003.
