The irony of the narrow gauge question is that Queensland adopted 3'6"
gauge to avoid heavy expenditure on the climb up the Toowoomba Range.
Apart from that and the other climbs of the Divide, most of QR is in
flat country that could have been built to Std gauge just as cheaply.
